RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is probably one of the most under-utilized services available today. RSS allows you to receive a website’s latest information via delivery as opposed to having to actually go to the website to read it and see if anything is “new”.

The WalpoleSports.org RSS feed is kind of like the paper boy for youth sports in Walpole; it will bring the latest youth sports directly to you. It’s a very convenient service.

So, how do you subscribe to an RSS feed, anyway?

There are multiple ways for you to subscribe to an RSS feed. You can download an RSS reader application to your desktop, you can add feeds to your Google Mail app, you can add feeds to your Yahoo Mail app… essentially, you need a vehicle in which you can receive your RSS notifications and read them.

My personal favorite way in which to receive RSS feeds is via a Yahoo Desktop Widget. A desktop widget is something that runs on your desktop and when an internet connection is detected it will loop through your RSS feeds and retrieve all the latest news for you. Since it’s a completely free service, give it a try. Here’s how:

  1. Go to http://widgets.yahoo.com/
  2. Click on “Get Started NOW”, http://widgets.yahoo.com/download/
  3. Download the Yahoo! Installer by clicking on the “Get Started Now” button.
  4. After downloading the installer, pick up the NewsStand RSS widget, http://widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/newsstand
  5. Once the NewsStand widget is installed, add the WalpoleSports.org RSS feed to receive the latest information from your favorite Walpole youth sports website:
    1. Click the [+] button in the left panel
    2. Enter the feed URL, http://walpolesports.org/feed
    3. Enter a name for the feed, WalpoleSports.org
    4. Accept the default values of 50 RSS items, updated every 30 minutes
    5. Submit and save your RSS feed.

What you’ll have now is a desktop based system which will deliver to you the latest news for Walpole youth sports.
