It was a perfect ending to a near-perfect season.
Playing their game and keeping the pedal to the metal from the get-go, the Walpole High laxmen made their lifelong dream come true when they beat St. John’s of Shrewsbury 17-8 yesterday at Commerce Bank Field in Foley Stadium, to win their first state title ever in the sport.
The win came in typical Walpole fashion, with the Rebels controlling the majority of the face-offs and the balanced offense feeding off a stubborn defense that was often part of the offense that excelled in transition.
The Rebels had jumped out to a 5-1 lead just 6:55 into the contest, and a brief St. John’s rally at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter that temporarily gave the Patriots the momentum was thwarted by a goal from junior Tim McDonald, giving Walpole an 8-3 lead.
