Villa trial moves to status hearing

The Daniel Villa trial was continued after very brief discussions this morning with the former Walpole football coach accused of raping 15-year-old high school girl present.
Norfolk Superior Court Judge Paul Chernoff ordered Villa back in court on Aug. 10 for a status hearing – where the court goes over evidence and discusses what future hearings are needed.
The 44-year-old Villa has pleaded not guilty to three counts of child rape and three counts of enticing a minor in previous court dates.
Villa was in court yesterday for a pretrial hearing. His attorney, Heather Baer, spoke to the judge and court clerk for only a few moments in private before the clerk announced the continuance.
A slimmer-looking Villa, who wore a shirt and tie with glasses, stayed quiet as he sat on the defendant’s bench during the talks.
The former New England Patriots offensive lineman and coach of the Super Bowl winning Walpole football Rebels was unfettered during the short proceeding – sitting alone among the general public awaiting his time before the judge.
Chernoff did advise Villa to see the probation officer before leaving …
