Hawley takes second at high school heptathlon

Walpole High junior Erica Hawley is one of the top two high jumpers, triple jumpers and hurdlers in the Bay State Conference, but every now and then one would see her carrying a javelin down to the lower field at practice, or heaving a shot over to the side of it.
It may have appeared to some that Hawley, an outstanding athlete, just couldn’t decide which event she wanted to do most or liked most, but that wasn’t the case at all.
In fact, Hawley likes all the events and wants to do them all – the main reason she became fascinated with the women’s heptathlon as a freshman and has been doing it ever since.
Not only has she been competing in the grueling event every year since, but she has also kept improving each time. Following last year’s surprising fourth-place finish as a sophomore, Hawley returned to the heptathlon this year and brought back a medal for finishing second overall.
