The Wellesley High boys’ basketball team had beaten Walpole pretty convincingly the first time they had met, and the Rebels were on the edge of tourney extinction, reeling from a series of tough losses.
When the Raiders arrived at WHS for the rematch Tuesday night, one might have expected the Rebels to leave the gym saying “wait until next year.”
Instead, the locals kept their slim tourney hopes alive by shocking the visitors, 46-43, in what turned out to be quite a barn-burner.
Both teams played extremely well, but there was no denying that the main catalyst and difference in the game was Walpole senior Tariq Tate.
Tate, whose older sister Tahtiana won a state title with the girls’ team thanks to her inside presence, terrorized the Raiders on the boards in the second half, especially the fourth quarter when Walpole stole the game.
Tate led all scorers with 12 points, adding two steals and a team-high five assists in his best game ever. He also hauled in 13 rebounds, including eight in the pivotal fourth quarter.
