A fan riding the Walpole High softball bandwagon might need Dramamine at the end of this season of motion sickness-inducing stops and starts.
After getting off to a miserable start the Rebels exploded to life with three straight big wins over tough opponents a week ago, putting themselves on the brink of clinching a state tourney berth.
They are still stuck on the brink of the state tourney, thanks to a pair of losses reminiscent of those that put them in a 2-3 hole to start the season.
Unfortunately for the Rebels, they are starting to prove how hard old habits are to break as they have reverted to their earlier bad ones.
“It was just a lot of sloppy play to start out,” said Coach Jim Duffy of Walpole’s latest loss, Monday’s 4-2 defeat at the hands of Weymouth at Bird School, dropping the locals to 7-5 with four games left. “We’re going back to our old ways. We need to regroup, …

Despite a constant deluge there would be no raining on the Walpole High boys’ parade on the Turco track in Tuesday’s final home meet of the 2009 season.
While the Walpole boys’ 4-by-4 relay team finished the running events with a personal best clocking, down below on the throwing field senior Captains Chris Cameron and Ryan Collins were finishing 1-2 in the javelin to close out a soggy but satisfying meet.
Neither performance was even necessary for the host Rebels to remain unbeaten at 6-0 however, as they had already stockpiled enough points en route to a convincing, 81-55 win over Wellesley. The win was revenge over the one team that beat the defending league champions last spring, and left the door still open for an unbeaten season. The only thing standing between the Rebels and perfection now is Dedham, which the teams visit this Tuesday.
The meet got off to an excellent start as the league’s top sprinter, Vinnie Lee, breezed to victory in the …

Schools gird for swine flu

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

As the count of American schools closed because of swine flu reached nearly 300 yesterday, local education and health officials said they were taking necessary precautions – but they do not foresee shutting the doors of their facilities.

That would change if there is a confirmed case of swine flu in a school.

If that were to happen in Norwood, "We would look to the Department of Public Health to make the recommendation," said Stacey Lane, assistant director of the Norwood Health Department.

Lane said while Norwood is not now planning on closing its schools, families should talk about contingencies should the situation change.

"They want people to have this conversation now and plan in case the schools are closed. I think that’s an important message," she said.

"We just want to stop the spread (of the disease), so practice good hygiene – if your child’s sick, keep him or her home from school. And if people do that, hopefully it won’t happen in our schools in Norwood," Lane said.

In Massachusetts, the Associated Press has reported that Boston public health officials say a student at the Harvard School of Dental …

WHS girls’ tennis shocks Brookline, 3-2

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

When the girls’ tennis season started, Coach Bill Powers admitted he didn’t have a true ace like former star Amy Shaw, but also declared that this was the deepest teams he ever had and that team balance might allow it to surprise some people.
The Rebels did just that Monday when they shocked perennial Bay State Conference and state power Brookline on its own courts, 3-2.
The balance and depth showed when the match came down to third singles and Julia Frankel kept her unbeaten record intact with a victory in the pivotal showdown.
The win moved the Rebels to a 4-1 record, trailing unbeaten Wellesley in the Bay State Herget standings. After chasing the Red and Blue to the wire in a 3-2 match at Natick to start the season, the deep Rebels are one match loss from a perfect record nearly a third of the way through the year.
“That was a big, big win,” declared an elated Powers, who also topped another perennial league power, Newton North, earlier in the year. “The depth helped us out today.”<br …

Ajemian_vs_Wellesley

The Walpole High boys’ lacrosse team had a great week this past week despite playing three tough non-league opponents.
During a demanding four-game week the Rebels visited Scituate in the pouring rain Tuesday, hosted the state’s top-ranked team, St. John’s Prep Thursday, went on the road again Friday to take on Div. 3 power Dover-Sherborn and finished Monday against league rival Wellesley.
It was a great week as they sloshed though a 19-9 win over defending Div. 3 state champion Scituate, played St. John’s to a virtual standstill in an 8-7 loss, broke open a close game with D-S in the third for a 15-6 win and flattened the Raiders, 11-1 at home. The three wins brought the Rebels to 9-1, one win from tourney qualification.
The Rebels didn’t have to work as hard to beat a rebuilding Wellesley as they did against the Prep
Senior Leo Ajemian (3 goals) got things going with an unassisted score 38 seconds in, and after four minutes he …

Walpole school board agrees to cut teachers, aides

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

In what they hope will be a "worst case scenario" reduction, School Committee members last night agreed they would cut another $840,000 for next year’s School Department budget.

Members called the cut a "tentative reduction" that could cost the job of 29 staffers, including 20 classroom teachers.

In two rounds of cuts earlier this year, the board had already sliced $2.5 million off next year’s expense, costing 14 staffers their jobs.

Last night’s cut, which would leave the schools with $29.9 million spending plan for fiscal 2010, is considered tentative because there is the still the possibility the state could hike its aid total to the town.

"The district will not be the same this year as it was last year," school Superintendent Lincoln Lynch said after he read each cut.

The bulk of the $840,000 budget reduction would come in the form of about 20 teachers and nine instructional aides losing their posts, said Lynch.

Some teachers who lose full-time status could be offered work part-time, he said.

Most of the teachers cut will come from elementary schools because of their high percentage of enrollment, …

Rebels top visiting Mansfield in 8 innings, 7-6

Like so many teams in the Bay State Conference, non-league foe Mansfield High discovered Saturday that Walpole High’s baseball squad is not a team you want to go into extra innings with.
Taking advantage of relief pitcher Tom Savageau’s wildness in the extra frame, the Rebels were able to win via a literal “walk-off” run as pinch hitter Adam Nichols became the fifth Rebel to walk in the eighth, forcing home Craig “Hammer” Hanley and snapping a 6-all tie to hand the host team a 7-6 win while upping its season slate to 6-1. Mansfield dropped to 4-3 with the loss.
The victory was the fifth already this year by one run, three of those coming in extra frames. Although played at Eldracher Field, the game was played by Hockomock League rules, which employ aluminum bats and seven-inning games.
Three keys led to an ultimate Rebels victory, which came despite the high-octane Hornets outhitting them 14 to six. The first was Savageau being unable to …

Walpole police readying for spring stings

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

After a winter hiatus, police will once again take an aggressive approach to curb underage drinking, according to Deputy Chief Scott Bushway.

Police will conduct stings that coincide with the upcoming prom season and high school graduation, said Bushway.

Last year, the department received a $5,000 grant to combat illegal drinking. That money, said Bushway, will continue to pay for the stings and the overtime details that are required to execute them.

There will be extra police "party patrols" on weekends, officers will monitor liquor store parking lots, and the department will employ a minor who will attempt to buy alcohol.

Bushway said he is warning local liquor stores, bars and restaurants of the stings because stopping underage drinking needs to be a collaborative effort.

"The goal is to see 100-percent compliance," he said.

The minor used to help conduct compliance checks will not possess identification and will not look 21, the deputy chief said.

Bartenders and clerks will simply need to ask for a form of identification, said Bushway. If they do that, he said, the minor is to leave without question.

"It’s easy to comply with," said Bushway.

Police will also be …
