Byrnes burns Norfolk in Little League game
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
After rolling through the rest of the District 11 Pool 2 field unbeaten, it looked like the Walpole Americans’ number was up against Norfolk Sunday afternoon.
Nothing seemed to be going right. Balls hit hard were going right at fielders, and Norfolk’s ace pitcher, Mike Galetta was pitching well. A clerical error was discovered when ace Nate Porack was out on the mound after starter Mike Curran reached his pitch count.
Walpole also started out down 3-0 after a shaky two-run second that included a pair of uncharacteristic errors on a hot muggy afternoon.
If there was any chance at all of anyone stopping the unbeaten Walpole Americans before the first round ended this was it.
That was, that is, until Byrnes burned Norfolk.
After the two-run second the locals clamped down defensively behind Curran’s strong performance, giving the Americans at least a chance of bouncing back.
They did it on Byrnes’ two-out, two-run double …
Legion ball: Post 104 clinches title
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
A dramatic comeback in a game that Foxboro needed gave the Thomas H. Crowley American Legion Post baseball team a loss to end the regular season last Friday but it mattered little.
Thanks to Walpole surging at the end of the season and Westwood suffering a couple of one-run losses, Post 104 captured the District 6 West league title and is back in a place it’s very used to: the postseason.
The loss ended Walpole’s season at 12-6, a half game and a point ahead of second-place Franklin, which used its own hot streak and Westwood’s late swoon to overtake Post 320.
Foxboro made out well also, using the win over Walpole to sneak in as the final playoff seed.
The locals actually clinched the title with a 6-5 win over Norfolk home at Eldercare Field the previous Tuesday.
Like Foxboro Norfolk needed the game to get in, but Walpole was not only trying to nail down the title, but wanted …
Little League: Walpole Americans keep rolling
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
While the hard-luck Walpole Nationals stumbled out of the starter’s gate when they started the 2010 district playoff run Monday and Tuesday, the Walpole Americans were looking like world-beaters, roaring to a 4-0 record.
Thus far it has been quite a tourney for Coach Brian Bender’s team, getting excellent pitching, impressive fielding and timely hitting in their first week of action.
All three were in play last Thursday when they opened with a 4-1 victory over Hopkinton, and they held steady Friday night by knocking off one of the tourney’s top teams, Wellesley South, 8-3.
The winning streak continued after Walpole returned to action Monday evening following the Independence Day break with a crushing, 18-2 defeat of Needham, and they made it four straight with Tuesday’s 11-0 shutout of Ashland.
Walpole only played five innings in each of those two games, thanks to the mercy rule.
Mercy is what opposing pitchers were seeking as their offerings were battered regularly by a hungry line-up. Doing the most …

Tournament Time for Little League, Tennis

American Legion Post 104 clinches title
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Once again, Walpole Post 104’s inordinate amount of pitching depth has taken hold in District 6 West competition.
Despite being forced to play nine straight days between June 22 and June 30, and a stretch of 13 games in 15 days, the locals surged to the top of the league and are on the verge of clinching the title.
After edging Norfolk this week, 6-5, the Thomas H. Crowley Post leads the 10-team division with a 12-5 record resigning powerful Westwood to second place.
Westwood did its best to stop the Walpole freight train with a 4-3 victory over the locals at Eldracher Field last Tuesday, but Post 104 completed a 3-2 week with wins over Needham (9-3) Wednesday, Norwood (11-3) Sunday and Canton (7-1) Friday. The only other blip in the schedule came Friday when last-place Dedham played to its potential and outslugged the locals 17-12 at Memorial Field.
The Westwood game was one of the season’s best as Tim Connors …
Little League: Walpole Nationals off to slow start
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
When the Walpole Nationals look back on their first week of play in this year’s District 11 playoffs, they may wince a lot more at the game with Westwood Monday, rather than Tuesday’s game when they were shut out by Wellesley Little League star Jack Dolan, 2-0.
It was the first game, a 6-5 loss to Westwood that will conjure the what-ifs if the Walpole National tourney run ends abruptly. With a victory over Westwood the loss to Wellesley North in pool play would probably have only created a rematch later on, when they would hope to avoid the 5-foot-10-inch human buzz-saw, who throws well over 70 miles an hour.
Instead the Nationals, one of the tourney’s favored teams, were forced to go into Wednesday’s game with Medfield needing every last game in round-robin play, as well as possibly outside help to join the Americans, who seem a lock after starting 4-0. It doesn’t help that Medfield was strong enough to push Wellesley North to extra innings.
“We played uncharacteristically, we made five errors,” said Coach Gene Lavanchy after the loss …
Babe Ruth: Walpole-6 takes title
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Walpole-6 had a fine regular season in the local 14-15 Babe Ruth League, finishing second with a 10-4 record.
As it turned out the kids had another gear, however, and once they shifted into it for the playoffs, the only ones that could stop them were themselves.
So dominant was Walpole-6’s four-game postseason, they averaged 11 runs a game and added an exclamation point when they rolled over regular season champion Walpole-5 in the title game, 15-3.
Like the 13-year-old league, Walpole was extremely dominant, grabbing all four semifinal playoff spots. Six of Walpole’s seven teams in the circuit had even or better records, and the first four places in the league went to Walpole squads.
Walpole-5 captured the league title at 10-3-1, but only beating Walpole-6 by a half game. Walpole-2 was a half game behind them at 9-4-1, and Walpole a game behind them at 8-5-1.
On top of that Walpole-5 led the 15-team league in runs allowed with just 72, and Walpole-6 led …
Softball: Hurricanes weather the Storm
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Monday night’s softball game at Chauncey Smith Field was a perfect one to batten down the hatches, although there were clear skies overhead.
The game between two teams of 12-year-olds not only had 25 runs clatter across the plate over six innings, but was also played between a group of Hurricanes and a squad of Storms.
Walpole proved that the Hurricane is stronger than a Storm, however, as the 12 B team racked up another win, climbing to 3-1 with the Hockomock League victory over the Norfolk Storm.
With the win, Walpole’s U12 teams have a combined 7-1 record.
While the girls showed they were still obviously leaning the game, there were also moments when they sparkled, and those helped Walpole snap a 9-9 tie in the fourth and nail down the win.
“We have a young group,” offered Coach Tim Torigian, “but we’re doing well. We only have a couple of thirteens, the rest are 11 or 12-year-olds.”<br …
Softball: Thundering heard in Natick
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
If teams across the state were not concerned about playing a squad out of the Walpole Girls Softball Association, they should be now.
Kicking off the summer tourney season in style, the 12-and-under and 14-and-under “A” teams swept the competition in the “Power in a Ponytail” regional tournament held in Natick over the weekend of June 25- June 27.
Between them, the Walpole squads won 13 games while dropping none, the closest game a 7-3 victory over the host team Saturday morning by Coach Pat Ryan’s U14 squad.
The U12 squad was the busier team, however, as an expanded field of 16 teams forced the finalists to play seven games. Walpole impressed the field by playing four games Sunday, and not dropping one. The fourth was the championship game, and without missing a beat, Walpole crushed Braintree, 11-2.
“It was a great tournament, it was great that both teams won the whole thing,” said league president and 12U Coach Bruce Cochrane. “To win four …
