Things could not have gone any better for the Walpole High lacrosse teams in the opening round of the MIAA state tourney.
Storms threatened to cancel Tuesday’s game at Turco Field between the host Rebels and visiting Dracut, but the Middles didn’t experience the real thunder and lighting in Walpole until the Rebels got going midway through the first half, ending up with an 18-4 victory.
Again the dynamic duo of Adam Niden and Kyle Guilbert pummeled the opposing net, amassing 18 shots between them while Niden led alls corers with five and Guilbert added four.
The biggest highlight came from senior P. J. Painten however, as the former starting goalie returned six weeks after a major knee injury to play attack and get his first career goal.
Senior Captain Ryan Izzo was also a major presence, drawing defenders and dishing to Guilbert, Niden and others for five assists to go along with two scores. Izzo also did …
WHS lax teams start tourney Tuesday

The MIAA state lacrosse tourney began this past weekend with yet another first for Walpole High: for the first time ever, both Rebel teams have won at least 75 percent of their games, with the girls 15-5 – their best regular season record ever – and the guys 16-3.
Walpole High students thus will be in their glory this week as they get to hang around on campus both Tuesday and Wednesday as the boys and girls each get to play host for the first round. Being the state tourney run by the MIAA, be prepared to pay, however, as students will be charged $3.00 admission and adults $7.00.
While the regular season didn’t go exactly as hoped by the defending Div. 2 state champion boys, they did enough to keep the rest of the field worried as they finished 16-3 overall and gained the fifth seed in Div. 2 behind Hingham, Concord-Carlisle, Medfield and Reading.
Making it even more fun is the Rebels possibly getting a chance to see Reading, which they knocked out of the tourney last year in …
