Softball: Rebels upset Milton, 7-1
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Now that the boys’ dual meet track season is over, the hottest team on campus at Walpole High is the varsity softball team.
Most would have expected that to end Monday, as the Rebels traveled to visit the hottest team on the Milton campus, RJ Maturo’s hard-hitting softball team.
After getting off to a slow start the Wildcats have been on fire, and went into Monday’s showdown on a seven-game streak, including a one-hitter over Needham by junior ace Brenna Callahan.
Walpole, however, stopped handing games away, solidified its defense and had ripped off six straight. Milton discovered just how hot the Rebels had gotten when they found their fearsome offense shut down by freshman pitcher Marissa Ryan, 7-1.
The victory lifted the Rebels to 11-4 in the league (13-6 overall), and left them in a virtual dead hat with the Wildcats fro second in the Bay State Herget behind top-ranked powerhouse Norwood.
The story wasn’t beating Milton, however, it was how …

Tennis: Boys’ doubles teams a surprise
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Once the Walpole High boys’ tennis team had gotten past Milton, the pressure was off.
An unexpected loss to Dedham earlier left no leeway for the Rebels to get back in the postseason for the seventh straight year, forcing them to beat the Wildcats or else.
They did just that a week ago Monday, leaving only two struggling teams, Norwood and Catholic Memorial on their agenda.
On Tuesday, May 18, they coasted by the archrival Mustangs, 5-0, and Monday they took care of an improved CM, 4-1. That left the Rebels at 8-9 with only a rematch in Norwood today (May 27) left on the schedule. Doing the expected now, a team that appeared to be good for only a handful of wins at the end of last season would be heading back to the postseason with a 9-9 record.
There are a lot of reasons for their success, but two huge ones are the accomplishments of the team’s doubles pairs. The most surprising …
Baseball: Rebels suffer two heartbreaking losses
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The Walpole High baseball team isn’t defending sectional champion or anything like that, but just by virtue of being the WHS team, the Rebels wear a huge target whatever their record.
That’s why, coming down the stretch with a lot of must wins in order to get back into the state tourney, the Rebels are still one of the most favorite teams to beat.
It’s also why teams usually throw their aces at the Rebels whenever they see them.
Despite their relative youth the Rebels have been putting the message across that if a team is going to beat Walpole it will have to earn the win. Thanks to further struggles at the plate this past week the locals dropped both games they played, dropping to 8-7 overall and needing to win two of their last three games to get back into a tourney that has seen Walpole High more than any other squad in the state the last three decades.
While the Rebels …
Lacrosse: Rebels boys climb to 16-3
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
After an eight-game streak that included a victory over Div. 1 power Needham on its own turf, WHS boys’ lacrosse was stopped dead in its tracks by Wellesley.
If there was any letdown after the 11-5 loss it didn’t last long as the defending Div. 2 state champ bounced back last Wednesday with a 15-4 crushing of Framingham, followed by Thursday’s 18-1 wipeout of Milton and Monday’s 16-4 thrashing of Norwood.
Playing all three games in enemy territory didn’t keep the Rebels from finishing the season with a perfect week, as they look forward to the upcoming state tourney with a 16-3 record.
Highlights included Kyle Guilbert and Adam Niden each notching their 100th career point.
Walpole blasted to a 7-1 lead after one quarter over the Flyers, and took a 10-1 bulge into halftime. Adam Niden led the attack with four goals and seven points, and both Ryan Izzo and Kyle Guilbert had hat tricks. Tim McDonald, Phil Nash, Donny Delpha and Nick Foley also scored while goalie Matt Niden had nine saves.
The onslaught continued against Milton …
Lacrosse: Rebel girls set win record
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Despite back-to-back losses to Div. 1 powerhouses Wellesley and Framingham last week, the Walpole High girls’ lacrosse team assured itself that it would finish the season with the best record in program history.
Thursday’s 12-4 win over Milton and Monday’s forfeit victory over Norwood, which created the situation by scheduling one extra game than the MIAA allows, combined with Wednesday’s 15-5 loss to the Flyers to give the Rebels a 15-4 record with one regular-season game left against non-league powerhouse Franklin.
The 15 wins are the most in program history, and with an expected high seeding in the Div. 1 tourney the Rebels are expected to set the mark even higher before they’re through.
Despite the historic occasion, Wednesday’s loss to the Flyers was a real trouble spot for the Rebels, who thought they got the short end of the lacrosse stick when it came to getting calls.
“We had a couple of tough calls to start the second half,” …

Track: Rebels take 3rd straight Herget title
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Can the Walpole High boys’ track team be called a dynasty yet?
Maybe not in Massachusetts, but in any high school that’s a member of the Bay State League Herget Divison, definitely.
With last week’s victories over Dedham and Needham, the Rebels locked up their third straight Bay State Herget title, as well as an impressive three-year dual meet record of 19-1-1.
The only loss in the span was a narrow 69-67 defeat at the hands (and feet) of Wellesely High, and that came during their first championhip seaon of the decade. Since then, the Rebels have gone unbeaten for two years, despite twice graduating athletes that were among the best in the state. Natick’s tie with Walpole April 28 gave the Red and Blue a share of this year’s crown.
While the wins over the Marauders (107-29) and Rockets (88-48) were expected, there were some things that weren’t, including a fantastic run in the 2-mile by junior Dave …
