WHS softball preview: Look out, Norwood

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Steph Frye softball

Look out Norwood, here comes Walpole.
With their deep and outstanding pitching the Mustangs have to be a preseason favorite to win the Bay State Herget softball title.
Experience and RJ Maturo’s ability to find the components to reload make the Milton Wildcats a threat as well, but both teams have to keep an eye in their rear-view mirrors for the charging Rebels.
Among other things the Rebels have their usual strong fielding and control pitching, but what they seem to have added this year is what they’ve needed most in recent season” a consistent offense.
Saturday’s jamboree at North Attleboro High School proved that as hitters up and down the line-up were making contact and moving base runners along.
Granted the Rebels don’t have prodigious power, but they’ve improved at “hitting them where they ain’t,” as Wee Willie Keeler once said.
That lack, where the whole line-up stopped hitting in unison, was the downfall of more than one recent …

Chauncey's grandchildren

The Chauncey Smith Field was dedicated to Chauncey Smith this past weekend. During the presentation, a sign was dedicated and a proclamation was read by long-time school committee member Jean Hogan, written by local state Rep. Richard Ross. For more on this story, see this Thursday’s issue of The Walpole Times. Also, check back to wickedlocal.com/walpole.

Field Status – MYLOD & ELLIS OPEN

From the Walpole Youth Soccer Association website:

MYLOD & ELLIS – Updated MON 4/5

Mylod & Ellis are both OPEN

Both fields are ok to use – but still mushy in spots. So here are the guidelines for this week – when we are open – but the fields are not yet great

Sandbags – put 2 sandbags on every net before you use them – this is your responsibility – keep the kids safe
Stay out of the goal boxes – move the goals 15yds [minimum] away from where they will be on game day
Stay out of the mushy areas - if the kids are leaving footprints or the turf is tearing up – move to a better spot – and change your drills to be kinder to the field
Share the fields with every team – if you have half a field and another team shows up – give them 1/4 of a field and you use the other 1/4 or agree to practice together or have a mini scrimmage – if 20 teams show up everyone will get a 20ys by 20yd box – you can run a great practice in a 20×20yd box – just plan for it
Trash – pick up your teams trash and any left behind by others

WHS basball preview: Fielders of Dreams

Tom Ryan practice

For the Bay State League, there’s probably nothing more disturbing than realizing that Walpole High has the tightest infield in the league.
Unless it’s the possibility that the guys that the starters beat out for their spots could be the second best infield in the Bay State League.
What the opposition is going to have to deal with though, is what could be one of the best fielding and deepest teams ever at Walpole High.
There was not one position on the field at Bird School that was not hotly contested, and Coach Bill Tompkins loves seeing that.
What he also always loves to see is a team that doesn’t hand away runs and features strong pitching, and he’s got that as well. In fact Tompkins has a team, based on injury factors, what the opposition will do and if the hitting is there when he needs it, that could reclaim the Bay State Herget title.
Even scarier is that Walpole …

WHS track preview: Can the Rebel girls make history?

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Erica Hawley

If one wanted to compare senior Captain Erica Hawley to anyone in the history of Walpole High girls’ track, it would be Meryl Carberry.
Not only could Carberry do well in virtually any event but like Hawley, her main event was hurdles, something few athletes can master.
Other similarities are the coachability of the two, how much alike they are physically, and how determined they are as athletes to improve and win.
There is one major difference between the pair, however. Hawley has an excellent chance of competing for a league championship this spring, something Carberry never could.
That had nothing to do with Carberry’s prowess as an athlete. While she was team MVP in 2001 and won each of her four events almost every time out as a senior, having few teammates (17 in 2001) kept her from rolling “Meryl-ly” along to any titles.
This spring, however, the Rebels have 60 girls, perhaps the most ever, and Coach …

WHS Boys’ track preview: Looking for a 3-peat

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Can the Walpole High boys’ track team defend its title with the graduation of the state’s top sprinter and New England’s tops hurdler?
Coach Tim Giblin thinks so, and if they do, the Rebels have a chance to do what few Walpole High boys have ever done in any sport – three-peat.
If the boys win they’ll be up there with the football, hockey and baseball programs in terms of dominance in the Bay State Herget.
It won’t be easy, however, as it never is in the balanced Herget. Milton, which won the league this winter, will be bolstered by the addition of athletes from the powerhouse basketball team, while Natick and Wellesley are making strides toward regaining their prominence in the sport.
Norwood has always come up with good athletes, especially in the jumps and throws, and Dedham has been adding numbers to its roster. Suffice it to say that if the Rebels do three-peat, they’ll earn it.
They will, however, have to overcome the graduation of state 100-meter champion Vinnie Lee, now at Tufts, and New England hurdling …

WHS sighs in relief with football alignment vote

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

In a vote held last Friday following two years of extensive research and planning, a radical change proposed in Massachusetts football was shot down by a vote of 190-114, according to the MIAA.
The vote concerned a controversial proposal in which the state’s leagues would be disbanded for the sport of football, in order to implement a playoff system meant to crown one champion from among eight qualifiers in each of six state-wide divisions.
The divisions would be set up mainly according to enrollment size of the schools’ male populations, with other considerations possible for private and vocational schools.
According to the plan, a new playoff system would have more teams involved, determined by record with a shortened regular season. It would also keep intact the Thanksgiving Day schedules.
The problem with the proposal, however, is ages-old: each athletic director and coach who had to vote had to do so in the best interests of their schools.
Therein lies the problem. A lot of schools have varied situations that could make the proposal either good or bad for their …
