Where there’s a Will, there’s a way

The team called Mitchellicious had little trouble wading through the field of 27 teams in the Johnson School volleyball tourney that raised $450 for the School’s new sign last week.
That is until it met Team USA. Despite only fielding three players, while every other team but one put four on the floor, Team USA marched through the other bracket until it got to the championship game, and took Mitchellicious in a tie-breaking third game Friday afternoon.
A major key to Team USA’s victory was the presence of big Will Bolster who let little get by him and scored a number of kills.
The match was an exciting one, with players from other teams, faculty volunteers and physical education teacher Johanna Madge and Assistant Principal Mike Friscia looking on. Both teams played well, with Jake Mitchell doing all he could to match Bolster’s effort. A sign Team USA’s victory was imminent may have come midway through the final game, however, as a long Bolster …
WYBA: Walpole snags 2 hoop titles

The Walpole Youth Basketball Association’s seventh-grade boys and eighth-grade girls’ teams had a lot in common this year, the most important being that each of them ended a great season as the MetroWest League’s champion in their respective division.
Along with balanced scoring, a propensity for dogged defense and knocking off other teams expected to send them packing, the teams each won its championship game by the slimmest of margins, in the boys’ case eight (39-31) and in the girls’ case, just three (48-45).
The boys’ game turned out to be quite an upset as a showdown between Weymouth’s vaunted offense and Walpole’s stingy defense went in Walpole’s favor.
The locals were pretty stingy throughout the tourney in fact, as they clamped down on everyone, allowing an average of 33 points per game.
“We preach defense and rebounding,” declared Coach Joe DiCalogero. “We weren’t supposed to win, but the team worked their butts off. It was a good victory for us. Some people after the game told us that they hadn’t seen kids play defense like this in a long …
Blessed Sacrament hoopsters move on

One more week, and one more step closer to a state title for two Blessed Sacrament hoop teams.
This past Sunday, both the Blessed Sacrament boys’ seventh and eighth graders and the girls’ sixth graders survived yet another test, putting both in the state title game at Milton High this Sunday.
The girls will play for the state title against St. Mary’s of Melrose at 2:00, with the boys enjoying a rematch with St. Ann’s, the team that stole the South Shore Parochial School League title from Blessed Sacrament two weeks prior, at 4:30.
If the girls beat the Medford school, it will be the second year in a row that they won the state title. Last year BSS broke away from Immaculate Conception of Revere with a 27-8 second half en route to a 41-26 win. They then went on to the New Englands, losing to the New Hampshire champion in a tourney held in Connecticut.
What was more impressive than the victory was the fact that the BSS team was young; all fifth graders in a tourney filled …
