Roy an instant success in sports
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The first week he showed up at the Walpole High lower gym to try out for wrestling last December, senior Jamel Roy couldn’t help attracting attention.
He had moved to Westwood and back again, but with a ready, reassuring grin, he put people at ease and made friends easily.
It wasn’t just Roy’s relaxed manner that attracted attention, however. The 194-lb., 5-foot-10-inch Roy had a body that appeared chiseled by the same mythological Greek gods who produced Hercules, something even more readily apparent when he donned a Rebel singlet for the first time.
Roy also left teammates staring in disbelief when he took down opponents with frightening speed, a testament to his other sport, jiu-jitsu.
All season long the newcomer kept amazing friend and foe alike as he used the speed he harnessed in martial arts to turn himself into a competitive wrestler.
Maybe competitive isn’t the best turn for what Roy became. In just three months, Roy was able to transform himself …
Changes in high school football playoffs voted down
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
A proposal to radically change the high school football playoff system was shot down Friday by a vote of 190-114 at the annual meeting of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association.
The MIAA Football Ad Hoc Committee has spent the last two years studying and gathering input on the current system used for the state playoffs and in what ways the system could be tweaked for the betterment of the student-athletes.
The proposal would have eliminated the current league system for football playoffs in favor of six statewide football alignments based solely on male enrollment, with mathematical adjustments made to private and vocational schools.
The plan would have taken effect in the fall of 2011.
Chmielinski spells championship
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
When Holy Cross football Coach Tom Gilmore first saw Luke Chmielinski play at Xaverian Brothers High School, he possibly had no idea how to spell the Walpole native’s name.
He did, however, believe that Chmielinski spelled success, and did his best job of recruiting the 5-foot-10-inch, 191-lb. slot receiver to play for the Crusaders.
Three years later Gilmore seems to have been proven right about Chmielinski and the rest of his crew. Having one of its best seasons in ages, the Cross cleaned up in the Patriot League, coming out one game ahead of Lafayette, Colgate and Lehigh with a 5-1 record last fall.
Along with the team, led by senior quarterback and 4-time MVP Dominic Randolph, Chmielinski came into his own last fall and is poised for another outstanding year as a senior this fall.
Chmielinski eventually became Randolph’s favorite downfield target, passing to him 63 times, and finished second by only 11 yards to Bill Edger in receiving yardage with 807, making him fifth in …

Field Status
From the Walpole Youth Soccer Association website:
MYLOD & ELLIS
Mylod and Ellis Fields will open on Saturday March 27th. Due to the rain – they will not be able to open before then. Please check the website on Friday night to be sure.
The fields will be minimally open – by this we mean that the lines on the fields will not be set up for play – The Goals/Nets should not be used at this time, please stay away from any areas of the field that are not ready to be used. Most of the players are not ready to play games and start shooting 50 balls at a net, even if they have been playing indoor. Please be smart, reduce the chance for injuries. Start by working on skills [dribbling, passing] and drills, including things like getting back to basics 1v1, 2v1, 1v2.
We are expected to have about 2″ of rain starting Monday night into Wednesday early morning which is not great as the fields are already waterlogged.
