WHS wrestlers look good in the big picture
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
When the Weymouth High wrestling team left Walpole High with a 44-21 victory last week, the Rebels were not disappointed at all.
That’s because they continued to look at the big picture, and that big picture is painted around the upcoming individual state tourney.
Even the team state tourney was a blip on the Rebel radars as Coach Devin Pacilli used Saturday’s tournament at Reading High to rest his top wrestlers and give younger athletes some valuable experience.
“We had nothing to gain and everything to lose,” offered Pacilli of Saturday’s tourney, talking in terms of rushing injured players and risking more injuries.
Instead they are looking forward to this weekend, when the Rebels descend on Needham High with a host of other Div. 2 teams at 9:00 on Saturday morning, but they will be ready.
The real warm-up was the Weymouth match, in which the Rebels did well despite missing their star and having another two …
Girls’ hockey: WHS stays in Herget title chase
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The Walpole High girls’ hockey team took a while to get going last Friday, but finally kicked it up a notch in the third period to give themselves a 4-1 victory over Framingham at Iorio Arena.
Senior Kellie Duffy led the team with two goals, while junior Kelsey Cosby also contributed a goal and an assist. Although the game was not dominated by a single team throughout the game, Walpole made the most of its opportunities to get the victory.
Walpole began the game with a great deal of pressure in the Framingham end, but the Rebels had a hard time getting off clean shots on net.
Framingham’s offense struggled for shots as well, as good defense kept Framingham’s shot total down as well. A poke check by Duffy to kill a 3-on-2 scoring opportunity by the Flyers led to two Walpole shots on net by junior Tori Richardson and freshman Michaela Tosone.
The shots were followed by a tripping penalty against the Flyers for Walpole’s first power play. Unfortunately, two Framingham clears prevented Walpole from taking advantage of the …

Track: Hawley leads girls to win in last dual meet
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Last Wednesday’s crossover track meet was an interesting turn of events for the Walpole High Rebels, as the boys lost 51-35 to Brookline while the girls eked out a 44-42 victory over Needham.
The boys, as the second seed in the Herget, faced the second seed in the Carey division, while the fifth-place girls faced the fifth-place team in the Carey as well. The strength of the Carey division on the boys’ side of things was clearly seen on Wednesday, as all six Carey teams beat their respective Herget division opponents.
The meet was off to a disappointing start from the first event as the Rebel milers were swept by all three Brookline runners, members of the third-best cross-country team in the state last fall. Unfortunately for the Rebels, one of their greatest strengths – distance events – is also the Warriors’ greatest strength.
Even though sophomore standout Justin Connolly ran a time of 4:50.78, a personal best for him, all three Warrior runners were able to get by him for a sweep. A similar situation evolved in the 1000-meter …
Gymnasts achieve winning record despite obstacles
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Maybe it wasn’t doing the impossible, but it was at least doing the improbable.
With only nine competitors, not always healthy, on hand for every meet, the Walpole High Rebel gymnasts managed to come out of the Bay State League dual meet season with a winning record.
They finished with a bang last week when the Rebels knocked off Weymouth, 128.2 to 123.8, to assure the winning season, and then had their second highest score of the year in a strong bid to add another win before falling to Braintree, 131.5 to 129.65 in the season finale last Tuesday.
The 129.65, which featured the long-awaited debut of freshman Krissy Pessa who was out al year with an injury, was the team’s highest score since it had a 130.95 in the loss to unbeaten newly crowned Bay State League champion Wellesley.
All things considered it was a great season for the tiny squad, which had nine competitors every meet until Pessa returned, and never were all of them totally healthy.
Walpole’s Amanda Carney, in fact, has been gutting out a …
WHS sports schedules for Thursday, Feb. 11
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
With Wednesday’s rescheduled games, there will be no lack of places to see Rebels in action for Walpole High sports fans today, although Wednesday’s Bay State League track meet will not be held since the Reggie Lewis Center has no availability.
Walpole basketball fans, however, will get to see an exciting doubleheader in Norwood between the male and female hoopsters from Walpole High and the archrival Mustangs. Please note that due to Norwood High School renovations, the games will not be held there, but instead at the James R. Savage Center at 275 Prospect Street in Norwood.
The boys will be taking the court first at 5:15, with the girls to follow at 6:45. The site is rather fitting since it is the home of Norwood Drama, and there will be a lot of sports drama as the Walpole girls try to solidify a postseason position while the boys will be trying to keep the Mustangs from tying them in the Bay State League standings.
Walpole hockey fans can also work out a doubleheader, thanks to the snowstorm that canceled both the boys and girls. The …
WHS hoop doubleheader at Norwood Savage Center Thursday
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The basketball doubleheader between archrivals Norwood and Walpole was so much fun and drew such a great crowd on January 15, that people couldn’t wait for it to happen again.
Mustang fans were especially thrilled since their girls took advantage of a rare opportunity to beat Walpole and their boys dropped a 65-58 barnburner in one of their best performances of the year.
The teams indeed will do it again, this Thursday (Feb. 10) in fact.
This time the Rebel boys and girls, and their fans, will be converging on the Savage Center on Prospect Street in Norwood. The gym is the temporary home for the Mustangs as the town works on the high school project.
The boys’ game will go first, set to tap off at 5:15, with the girls playing at 6:45. There is a lot at stake for both Walpole teams Thursday.
First of all, the girls still need one more win to get back in the postseason (after beating Milton Tuesday night), which is even more important that their second goal, which is revenge on …
Walpole High’s Wednesday athletics postponements
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Please be advised that Wednesday’s expected inclement weather has forced the postponement of three athletic events involving Walpole teams.
The girls’ hockey game against Milton at the Iorio Arena will be moved to either 5:00 or 7:00 in the evening Thursday at the Iorio, depending on availability of ice time. The boys’ game at the Ulin Rink is also postponed, at this moment to a time to be determined. Finally, the Bay State Conference league meet in track, which was to be held Wednesday at the Reggie Lewis Center, is also postponed and will probably not be held because the Reggie Lewis isn’t available before the postseason. For updates, those wishing to attend either hockey game may call the AD’s office at either school and listen to their sports scheduling hotlines.

Hockey: WHS Rebels finally eliminated
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The Bay State Hockey League finally eliminated the Walpole Rebels from tourney contention this week, but it took two of the state’s top teams, and it took each until the very end of their respective games to do so.
On Wednesday night the Rebels hosted Bay State Herget rival Wellesley at the Iorio Arena and found themselves tied with the Raiders 3-all before the visitors finally pulled away in the waning moments of a 5-3 Raider victory.
Saturday night the Rebels traveled to the home of one of the league’s top teams, Framingham, and turned in a repeat performance, closing to 3-2 in the second before losing, 6-2.
Each time Coach Jamie O’Leary pulled goalie Bill Sweeney for an extra skater, but the opposition was able to hold off the hard-skating Rebels.
Framingham, the Globe’s 15th-ranked team, and Herget-leading Wellesley finished the week with a combined record of 21-6-5, showing exactly how far the young Rebels have come the second half of the …
Boys Travel Spring – u11, u12, u14
From the Walpole Youth Soccer Association website:
Hi Soccer Families
For the Spring soccer season, we have fewer boys who will be playing soccer than in the Fall, due to conflicts primarily with baseball. So based on tryouts that were done at the end of the Fall season and the coaches evaluations, teams have been reconfigured. So some teams have changed a little, some have been changed allot, and some have gone away. We hope everyone has a great Spring soccer season.
Boys u11, u12, u14 teams – will be posted in the next few days.

Basketball: Tariq havoc
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The Wellesley High boys’ basketball team had beaten Walpole pretty convincingly the first time they had met, and the Rebels were on the edge of tourney extinction, reeling from a series of tough losses.
When the Raiders arrived at WHS for the rematch Tuesday night, one might have expected the Rebels to leave the gym saying “wait until next year.”
Instead, the locals kept their slim tourney hopes alive by shocking the visitors, 46-43, in what turned out to be quite a barn-burner.
Both teams played extremely well, but there was no denying that the main catalyst and difference in the game was Walpole senior Tariq Tate.
Tate, whose older sister Tahtiana won a state title with the girls’ team thanks to her inside presence, terrorized the Raiders on the boards in the second half, especially the fourth quarter when Walpole stole the game.
Tate led all scorers with 12 points, adding two steals and a team-high five assists in his best game ever. He also hauled in 13 rebounds, including eight in the pivotal fourth quarter.
With a …
