Gallivan vs. Brookline

The Walpole High boys’ basketball team lost to Brookline High January 8, dropping the Rebels’ overall record to 2-6, 0-6 in the league.
The team had reached its nadir the first half of the previous game, when it self-combusted in a 56-35 loss to Wellesley.
During that first half a disorganized Rebel squad scored just 12 points as the Raiders rolled to a 19-point bulge by the break.
Fortunately, the Rebels fans never gave up on their team, and the Rebels never gave up on themselves.
Since that first half on January 5, the young team has started making strides toward becoming what it is capable of, and as it heads into the second half of the season, not only promises to be an exciting entity the rest of the year, but to produce a nucleus that will be competitive for at least the next two seasons after.
Following halftime of the Milton game, in which Coach Dave St. Martin’s talk …

Boys’ hockey: Milton shuts out WHS, 2-0

Sweeney vs. Milton 1-13-10

It seems that any time the Milton High School boys’ hockey team has a Muse in the net, the Walpole Rebels are not amused. Instead, it usually spells trouble.
Right now the Wildcats are on their third Muse, senior Mike, and nothing has changed much.
Last year Muse handled the Rebels twice during the regular season, and he got this year’s home-and-away Bay State Herget series off to a fine start – for him – with a 2-0 shutout Wednesday night at the Iorio Arena.
“Mike played well in goal,” offered Milton Coach Paul Noonan. “It seems that for the last couple of years he’s had Walpole’s number.”
It had to be frustrating for Walpole senior goalie Bill Sweeney, who played another excellent game without getting the “W.”
Sweeney recorded 26 saves in absorbing the loss, including back-to-back stops on Joe Indelicato and Justin Barbera with less than three minutes left in the first period.
   Muse had 22 …

Track: WHS boys unbeaten; Hawley haul for girls 18 points

Despite tough odds, the unbeaten boys’ track team once again passed a difficult test and proved its strength by topping the Natick Red and Blue with a score of 42-40, last Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Center. The girls however, were unable to conquer a talented Natick team as they fell 51-35.
The Rebel boys knew it was going to be a close meet going in, and that was exactly the outcome as the meet carried on. The mile kicked off the meet, and was the first of many victories the Rebels needed to get the overall “W”. Junior Dave Connors was hot off the gun taking an early lead, but was eventually passed by junior teammate Dave Wians who cruised to first in 5:01.
Connors, not far behind, raced it out with his Natick counterpart Pat O’Loughlin for a key second place time of 5:05. The 1000-meter race was even more of a nail biter, with sophomore Zach Ganshirt yielding second place with a time of 2:59.7, just a short .66 seconds behind Natick’s lead runner. The race was just another …

Basketball: Brookline girls all shook up Friday

Frattasio drives on Wellesley

A wake-up call might have been all the Walpole High girls’ basketball team needed to get back into gear, and long-time rival Wellesley was more than happy to be the team that delivered it.
The wake-up call came last Tuesday at Walpole High, and was a harsh one as the high-powered, unbeaten Raiders hit almost everything they took in the first half en route to a 64-26 pasting of the host Rebels.
The loss was the third in four games for the locals, and the skein threatened to get longer as they were going to host a tough Brookline at WHS Friday night.
A loss to the Warriors, 6-2 coming in and battling for the Bay State Carey crown, would have dropped the Rebels to 4-4, and psychologically, they may not have been able to bounce back, especially with senior guard Liz Malone now out with a broken hand.
Instead, the Rebels, especially Captain Molly Grimes, left the visiting …

Tom Donnellan vs. Brookline

The Walpole High boys’ basketball team had a rough week as the Rebels dropped two games in disappointing losses to Wellesley on Tuesday night, and Brookline on Friday night. The boys dropped to 2-6 as they struggle to gather momentum as the season wears on.
The trip to Wellesley was unsuccessful and disheartening for the Rebels as a 56-35 loss to a good shooting team was added to the books. The Raiders took advantage of sloppy Walpole play and prevented them from ever catching their expansive lead throughout the game.
The competition began with the Raiders off to a quick start. Walpole had a hard time getting themselves on the board with the quarter concluding with the score at 16-6. Despite an energetic performance by junior Mike Gilmartin off the bench, Walpole could not seem to get the ball in the hoop, or swing the momentum in any way. The second quarter was much the same way as Walpole had …

Track: Unexpected heroes lead boys to 42-40 win

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

The Walpole High boys’ track team had two immediate problems before it ever ran an event at the Reggie Lewis Center Thursday.
First its opponent that day, Natick, matched up very well with the Rebels, such as having two guys who threw the shot put over 38 feet, and having a high jumper while Walpole at the time had none.
Second, a continued knee injury to senior Ryan Doherty left the Rebels vulnerable in the 1,000, and left first-year winter coach Conor Cashman in a quandary.
Coming into the season, the Rebels looked good against the Red And Blue, and capable of forcing a showdown with powerful Milton for the Bay State Herget crown.
Then came Thursday’s meet and in order to win Cashman needed to make some strategic line-up moves and some Rebels needed to step up in order to keep the perfect season alive.
All three things happened as Cashman’s distance gamble paid off, two Rebels stepped up in a huge way and their efforts helped turn a tight meet into a 42-40 win.
   The meet …
