Walpole students from Catholic Memorial School earn top honors at forensics tournament

Catholic Memorial School students from Walpole excelled at the annual Natick High School “Holly Fest” speech and debate tournament. Winning top prizes were senior Chris Masterson (second place – Original Oratory) and junior Nick Leney (second place – TV News Team).  Also winning was Easton sophomore Ryan Lemoie (second place- TV News Team).

Overall, 13 CM students earned honors as participants in final rounds at the tournament.  The team came in fourth place overall. 

"This team should be proud of the success we shared at the Holly Fest," said head coach Rob Croteau ’93.  "Our team demonstrated great strength in the prelims, and this performance put us within points of being in the top three at a major tournament.  Congratulations to the entire team for a week of great focus and a willingness to put in long hours."

Walpole Teachers Association accepting scholarship applications

The Walpole Teachers Association is taking applications from any senior interested in a career in education.  Two $1,000 awards are available. Applicants need to first, write a one page letter that states why you want to be a teacher that also includes what you would do on your first day in class; second, identify (again, in a page or less) the one teacher who has had the most impact on you and why.  Please attach a resume or profile. Materials should be submitted by Jan. 6 to the mailbox of Mrs. Keller, the school nurse, who will assemble and forward all materials to the rest of the Scholarship Committee. The winners will be announced at graduation in June.

 “This is what drugs do to you,” said Joe, a 19 year old recovering from years of alcohol and drug abuse. “I thought it was cool. Everyone was doing it. But I lost college scholarships, got kicked out of college and was put in jail.”

Freshman and sophomore students from Walpole High School gathered to listen to young adults on Tuesday, Dec. 15 who had experienced the affects of drugs and alcohol from an early age. This presentation was sponsored in part by Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.) and the high school administration to inform students about the power of drugs and alcohol and the consequences of possession.

Bill Phillips founded New Beginnings, a Framingham-based counseling and drug awareness and intervention program in 1985, and has worked closely with parents, teens, schools and the MIAA to provide workshops, personal counseling, and motivational speeches in the Metro West region and beyond since that time.
