Tri-County 30, Old Colony 0: T-C top cats in Mayflower Small

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

The Tri-County football team secured its second consecutive Mayflower Small Conference title with a decisive 30-0 win over Old Colony in the third annual Cougar Classic yesterday.

The matchup is known as the Cougar Classic because both teams share the same mascot. The win gives Tri-County (8-3, 7-1) a spot in the MIAA Division 4A playoffs as well as a chance at redemption following last year’s loss in the Super Bowl.

"The kids were really fired up today and I think it showed out there on the field," said Tri-County coach Dan MacLean.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Tri-County got on the board on the first play of the second quarter with a 10-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Randy Hardy. Sophomore running back Steve Hogan ran in the two-point conversion to give the Cougars an 8-0 lead.

The Tri-County defense kept that momentum, forcing a three-and-out on Old Colony’s next possession. Just four plays later, senior running back – and the game’s offensive MVP – Chad Todesco pounded his way through the Old Colony defensive line and scored on a 26-yard touchdown run. Todesco finished the day with …

Porkers corner Hillers, 4-0

captains get trophy 2

After losing in the state semifinal last year via a disputed call the Walpole Porkers have been on a mission this year.
Unfortunately, for the Hopkinton Hillers, last night they were in their way.
The Hillers ended up losing the Div. 1 South sectional title game in Taunton 3-0 last night to Walpole, but for more than a half they gave the 10-time state champion all it could handle with crisp passing, strong defense led by sophomore Tamara Mills, a couple of very dangerous shots and the strong goaltending of senior Lauren O’Loughlin.
Walpole, however, was on a mission.
After battling to a scoreless tie through one half, the second-seeded Hillers found themselves under siege early in the second half as the Porkers threw all they could at O’Loughlin, who had only given up two goals all year.
Walpole was able to get a handful of corners in the first 10 minutes of the last stanza and scored on two of them, …

Walpole High’s Izzo smashes state scoring record

Izzo scores record breaker

Football has always been a matter of great pride in Walpole.
There’s the fact that the team with the most Super Bowl victories in state history, Brockton, could not beat the Rebels either time the Boxers played them for it all.
There’s the fact the Rebels have seven Super Bowl championships, including the two they wrested away from Brockton, at one time the largest high school east of the Mississippi.
There’s the fact that the first starting quarterback in the history of the Patriots organization, Butch Songin, was from Walpole, and that possibly the greatest player in the history of Holy Cross, John Turco was from Walpole.
Now there’s another reason for great football pride in the community of just over 20,000.
As of 1:30 on Sunday afternoon, or 15:27 game time into the Rebels’ showdown with Natick for the Bay State Conference title, Walpole could also lay claim to having the highest scorer in Massachusetts state history …

Junior quarterback Randy Hardy led Tri-County to an easy 38-0 win over Holbrook in this Mayflower Small tilt with 208 rushing yards, four rushing touchdowns and a 70-yard touchdown pass to senior Nate Keene.

The Cougars (7-3, 6-1) jumped out to a 18-0 halftime lead and never looked back. A win next week puts Tri-County in the playoffs for the second straight year and clinches the conference championship. Junior linebacker John St. Don led the Cougar defense with eight tackles.

O’BRYANT 28, MARIAN 7: Marian junior halfback Bill Kinshers racked up nearly 80 yards and one touchdown, but the visiting Mustangs were outmatched by non-league opponent O’Bryant

O’Bryant fumbled on their opening drive, and the Mustangs recovered and took the ball into the end zone on two plays. Kinshers scored on a 20-yard run up the middle early in the quarter.

Marian (4-4) took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter, but was unable to hold off O’Bryant’s offensive charge, surrendering 20 second-quarter points.

ARLINGTON 10, WESTON 8: Junior quarterback Nick Teacher tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Greg Cohen and then ran in the two-point conversion midway through the …

Confusion over elective class almost costs Walpole graduate her athletic scholarship

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

The Walpole schools are shouldering the blame of a college eligibility crisis that nearly cost a high school graduate her athletic scholarship this year.

The University of Vermont freshman and former Walpole High School field hockey player ran into scholarship difficulties this summer due to what the school officials are calling a lack of communication with the National Collegiate Athletics Association over an unapproved senior elective course.

Superintendent Lincoln Lynch refused to name the female student athlete, but did say she took one of three courses her senior year that had not been approved by the NCAA.

Potential collegiate athletes must submit eligibility papers to the NCAA Clearinghouse consisting of a transcript of their grades from approved high school courses.

The field hockey player, however, took an elective class last year as a senior called “Coming of Age,” which had not been cleared by the NCAA.

“Coming of Age” and the course “Communication and Media Literacy” have still yet to be approved by the NCAA. Another high school elective course, called “Writing a College Thesis.” has only been recently approved by …
