Acton-Boxborough teaches Walpole the ‘A-B seize’

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Junior goalie Hannah Rockwood made the biggest save of her career and the biggest save of the Div. 1 state field hockey tournament, but unfortunately it had no effect on the outcome Wednesday night.
Walpole fans were in the stands on both sides of the turf at Canton High hoping Rockwood’s stop on a penalty shot in the first half would ignite Walpole to storm right back with its own goal, but instead the Porkers were shut out for the first time this season in a 1-0 loss to the Acton-Boxborough Colonials.
The loss not only marked the third straight year a Dual County team had eliminated the winningest Division 1 team in history, but it was also the second time in three years that A-B beat the Porkers in the state’s Final Four.
Maybe last year’s 2-1 loss to Weston was questionable, thanks to the Wildcats scoring before the Porkers could bring the ball up as is custom. However, there was nothing questionable about the way the Colonials played.
They played a strong, all-around game, especially at midfield, …

Shea 38th at state meet

Courtney Shea

When junior 2-miler Courtney Shea announced to her teammates and Coach Tim Giblin that she was going out for the Walpole High cross-country team for the first time this past season, they were all thrilled.
They didn’t, however, know how thrilled they would be at season’s end, a feeling that was upgraded to ecstatic when they watched her finish 38th overall in the Div. 2 state championship Saturday.
As it turned out Shea was just as thrilled, not just for the very strong race she ran, but also for the fact that she heard her named screamed pretty loudly despite the fact that she was racing in Northfield, Massachusetts, on the other side of the state over 100 miles away.
“A bunch of us drove down to see her,” offered WHS senior tri-Captain Sophie “Jersey Girl” Koukoulas, who has been out all year with a leg injury. “We got a couple of cars and loaded them up and went out to cheer her on.”

Norfolk Aggie harriers have run of Mayflower League

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

When one thinks of an agricultural school, one usually envisions farm animals, John Deere equipment and sprawling acreage, especially the sprawling acreage.
Therefore, what better place to plant a successful cross-country team, where all that acreage is put to ultimate use?
There has been cross-country at the Norfolk Agricultural High School in Walpole for years, with a pretty course carved out of the 300 acres that surround the campus.
Unfortunately, with a student population of 460 coming from literally all over the county and then some, recruiting on campus has been a challenge and success at Norfolk Aggie has been just a dream, until now that is.
A concerted effort of both recruiting and building a program by Coach John Williamson has turned up a group of boys and girls who have an earnest desire to work hard and succeed at everything they attempt, and that includes running the Norfolk Aggie course.
The end result is this year’s super season in which the boys finished 9-1 in the Mayflower League (13-1 overall) and was the top small school in …

More physical education options needed to promote student fitness

volleyball captains end on a high note

From the WHSTheRebellion.com website:

As three young sophomores on a varsity team dominated by seniors they worked hard to earn the starting spots they now shine in.  As juniors they saw a losing season and did not give up, and returning this season as seniors they transformed a nearly identical team into a winning …

Peter bowes passing

In recent years when Thanksgiving arrived, it usually came with the added drama of either two divisional champion football teams duking it out for supremacy, or Weymouth trying to play spoiler against the high-flying Walpole Rebels.
This year, however, the cleat is on the other foot.
While Walpole has the better record and the top player in the state in Ryan Izzo, the 9-1 Rebels have been thrust by circumstances into an opportunity to play spoiler.
With Natick having wrenched the Bay State Herget title and accompanying playoff berth from the 2008 Super Bowl champs, this time it’s the Rebels playing simply for pride. No bowl games, no title, and no winning streaks are on the line. Natick took care of that.
However when the Wildcats arrive at Turco Field Thursday they will actually still have a shot at the Carey title and playoff berth.
The Wildcats have come down to the final day of the season in a tie for …
