Izzo tops 5,000 yards in 28-14 grid win over Newton North

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

What do Peter Bowes, Chris Norberg and Connor Whittemore have in common?
Each was tied at the end of the first half of Saturday night’s football game with Kourtney Wornum Parker for the most Newton North receptions in the first half of the football game at Walpole High’s Turco Field.
The only problem is that each one of them played for the Walpole Rebels, and each was key to a 21-0 Walpole edge at halftime. The unbeaten (3-0) Rebels used the lead to secure a 28-14 victory over a talented Tiger team that refused to give up despite a first-half injury to star back Troy Peterson. The Tigers could have used Peterson, who had 26 yards in six carries before going down with an ankle injury..
With both Hao-Kai Wu (62 yards) and Ben Clark (31 yards) doing well in his absence in a second-half surge, the Tigers were able to close the gap in the fourth quarter and force Walpole to keep numerous starters on the field.
The three of them combined, however, couldn’t match the continued inexorable march …

Showdown in Wellesley Friday night

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

The first of this year’s Bay State Conference football showdowns is upon us, and it should be a doozy when the unbeaten defending state champion Walpole Rebels visit the unbeaten Wellesley Raiders Friday evening under temporary lights.
Wellesley High School is under construction, which will limit parking and require many fans to park at the Wellesley Middle School on Kingsbury Street and take a shuttle bus to the game (plan on an early arrival just in case).
The football team was under construction the last couple of years as well, but it appears that the work is done and Coach Bill Tracey, who happens to live in Walpole, is enjoying the final product.
Thus far this year the Raiders, led by quarterback Brendan Brooks, wide receiver Casey Tanner and running back Manny Lubin, have knocked off powerful Bay State Carey contender Weymouth 26-14, as well as Dedham (32-7) and Framingham (25-7).
They are far from through winning games, but the Rebels hope they won’t be winning any this weekend.
This game is unusual in that it puts the weight …

Walpole gets high marks on MCAS exams

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Walpole public school students well-exceeded state averages in the latest round of MCAS tests and school officials say they are pleased with their progression toward federal goals.

“We’re very happy with the overall numbers,” said Assistant Superintendent and Director of Curriculum Jean Kenney.

Of all the grades that took the test, 82 percent of Walpole students scored in the “advanced” or “proficient” categories the English exam. That number is compared to a state average of 67 percent of students scoring in the top two tiers for English.

In math, 67 percent of Walpole students in all grades scored in advanced or proficient, better than the state average of 55 percent.

MCAS test takers are scored in one of four categories – advanced, proficient, needs improvement, or failing – with the advanced and proficient scores considered passing marks. MCAS results were released on Sept. 17. For the full scores, log on to:

Breaking down the results by grade, only the grade 5 and grade 7 math portions hovered at the state median.

A total of 56 percent of Walpole’s fifth graders passed the math …

Boy’s cross country lifts record to 4-1

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

The present and the future continued to unfold simultaneously for the Walpole High cross country programs this past week.
While the varsity teams continued to flex their muscles last week against perennially strong Natick the freshmen and jayvees made a statement of their own at the annual Mustang Invitational.
The Mustang Invite, which involves many teams from the Bay State Conference, is a nice way to gauge how well the team’s underclassmen will fare in coming seasons.
While the jayvee and freshman boys both did well, the real eye-opener was provided by the jayvee girls, who took first through sixth overall. Junior Colby Nadeau led the way by winning the whole thing in 23:41, and was followed in succession by teammates Paolo Xerxa (2, 23:59), Kiara Matier (3, 24:17), Cristina DiVrgilio (4, 24:35), Emily McManus (5, 24:42) and senior ichaela Brady (6, 24:52). Kristen Lawrie rounded out the Rebels by finishing 19th in 27:02.
The boys also did well, beginning with Chris Conley’s second-place finish in 9:25. Four others finished in the top 10 as Matt Zampi was fourth in …

WHS volleyball continues improvement

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Walpole High volleyball continued making inroads against the Bay State Conference power elite last week when the Rebels finally stole a game from perennial nemesis Brookline.
Unfortunately the locals dropped the Wednesday match at Elm Street School three games to one, and combined with Friday’s 3-0 win over Milton and Monday’s 3-1 loss to Merrimack Valley Conference power Dracut, the Rebels dropped to 3-6 by midseason.
The bad news for the Rebels is that they’re falling into a hole they’ve dug many times before, forcing them to need once more a regular season-ending streak if they want to return to the state tourney.
The good news is that most of the toughest matches are out of the way, so the chances of sneaking back into the postseason are not improbable. Also on the side of the good news is that despite the record, the Rebels are continuing to improve and could be on the verge of some upset wins.
Stealing the third game from Brookline, 25-19, is a start.
“We accomplished some of our goals, like coming from behind, not …
