WHS male harriers run down a title

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

As boys’ cross country teams across Eastern Massachusetts prepare for the postseason, they have to decide what of two notions scares them more about Walpole.
They could be more concerned by the fact that the Rebels are now the Bay State Herget champions, having taken over where Wellesley left off last year, or there could be more cause for alarm that the two runners who have risen to the front of the Rebel pack are only sophomores and still improving.
When they beat Framingham 20-38 last Tuesday to complete the dual meet season, it was a mere formality as they had already locked up the Bay State Herget.
However the win not only was a great way to enter the postseason, which begins with Saturday’s annual Bay State Conference championship meet (1:00, Coakley Middle School, Norwood), but combined with the girls’ 23-38 victory over their counterparts assured Walpole of one of the best years ever by the combined teams.
The boys finish 9-2 overall, with their only losses to powerhouses Brookline and Newton North, the only teams the Rebels could …

Walpole High boys’ soccer climbs standings

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

For the second time in eight days the Walpole High boys’ soccer team pulled off an unexpected win when they knocked off Herget rival Milton, 3-1, on the Wildcats’ own turf last Friday.
The victory was significant for a couple of reasons – one, after only scoring five goals over their first 11 games they tallied the same number in just their last three and two, with wins over Braintree, Wellesley and Milton, they managed to avoid finishing in the league basement.
The Rebels scored their first upset when they took out league-leading Wellesley at home October 13, 2-0. While other rebuilding teams would be satisfied with that they wanted more, and got it.
The week started with Wednesday’s tough, 2-0 loss on Framingham.
With Adam Niden in net and the Rebels playing their usually tenacious defense, they held the high-powered Flyers to a scoreless tie through the first half.
They kept hopes of a second straight upset alive when the double shutout headed into the sixtieth minute, but the second-ranked Flyers (11-1-3) finally cashed in with about 20 minutes …

Cheer madness in Walpole

Getting up in the world

The Walpole High School cheerleaders are pursuing their seventh straight straight Bay State Herget title this year, a record on campus matched only by the field hockey Porkers.

Since taking over the squad after graduating from college, former Rebel cheerleader Courtney Saulnier Doherty has turned the squad into a powerhouse. The squad has been the Bay State Herget champion since 2003, and that includes two years when the team went coed.

The squad kicks off its 2009-2010 season this Tuesday (Nov. 3) when it travels to Braintree High School for the annual Bay State Conference championships. Competition starts at 7:00PM.

The Rebels next  compete at the Foxborough Invitational on Sunday (Nov. 8), starting at noon. The Invite at the town next door is a warm-up for the bigger competitions, replacing  the Shepherd Hill competition for the locals who have made the long trek out there the last few years.

Then the real fun begins, as the state regional will be held the following Sunday …

Weekend Field Update – Travel Teams

From the Walpole Youth Soccer Association website:

We had 4″ of rain in the past 7 days and our regular playing fields are not doing very well. None of them have been useable yet this week, and several of them will not be playable this weekend – some of them will be very marginal.

What does this mean for you – it means that rather than wait until Saturday morning to have us start canceling games because some of the fields are not playable – we have decided to line up alternate fields as best we can for the games that cannot be played on the scheduled field. Some games will stay at the original fields – for example Ellis will be playable on Saturday and Sunday. We also expect Mylod Field 2B – to be playable on Saturday. But Mylod 1,2a,3a,3b,4 will not be playable. This means that by moving many games to alternate fields – we expect to be able to get all the games in – but your field may change or your playing time may change or both. I know that this can sometimes create conflicts – do the best you can – but try to get the game played – we have no idea what the weather will be like next week – and we will be unable to schedule any weekday make-up games after daylight savings time ends.

If your game time has changed or your field has changed or both – please alert the other coach ASAP – call them or send them an email – make sure they know. They should also receive a BAYS notification when the referee system – adjusts the game which should happen on Friday at some point. But it is very important that they get notified ASAP. Our goal is to get all the games played this weekend – rather than have to re-schedule.

Check Below for all the Changes:
BMS Practice Field – is located at Bird Middle School – if you stand on east street and face the back of the school – it is the 8v8 field on your left – it is in the outfield of the babe ruth field. The only twist – is that even though it is an 8v8 field – it does have 11v11 size nets – which will be fine – as both teams will have the same size nets – it’s the best we can do with so many fields closed. Suggest to the other team – that they should park in the BMS parking lot – which is off of Washington Street – as this will be the best place to get a parking space.

Saturday – October 31st
8v8 games that changed

Walpole High swimmers tie Needham, in first alone

Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Morgan Smith vs. Wellesley

When it comes to ties in sports, it mainly comes down to a matter of perspective.
While most winners, like legendary University of Alabama football Coach Bear Bryant, always felt that ties are “like kissing your sister,” those who have never beaten that team look at them as another step in the right direction.
The same can be said of last Tuesday night’s epic tie swim meet between Needham and Walpole in the Bay State Conference. Walpole has beaten the Rockets before, but that wasn’t as big as this deadlock.
Bay State Carey leader Needham, one of the top teams in the state in Div. 1 only a few years ago, was on the verge of stealing the overall BSC title back from rival Framingham, the defending champ. Their only problem was that they were shocked earlier this year by Natick, and nothing short of a win over Walpole could complete the mission.
The Rebels, on the other …
