FREE Player Skills Clinics – Updated 9/14 – K thru 8th grade
From the Walpole Youth Soccer Association website:
Based on the success of the Girls & Boys Summer Skills Training – we have added some FREE skills sessions for the Boys and Girls players this Fall. All players in the agegroup are invited to come and learn, as well as all coaches. Bring a ball, 2 water bottles, wear a white shirt and dress to play soccer. Due to the limited number of skills training slots each week, and fading daylight, not every age-group will practice every week.
Skills Sessions for u10, u11, u12 and u14 players will be done by Darrin Marshall who is a National “A” [highest you can get] coach. Darrin has also coached for the MA ODP [Olympic Development Program], the Regional Team – including taking teams overseas, and clinics for the Boston Breakers and CLUB Soccer. Villa case helps spur town to consider updating communication policy
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Pointing to the Daniel Villa case as an instance of extreme inappropriateness between an educator and student made easier by technology, Franklin schools are looking into a policy change that would restrict communication between school staff and students.
Villa, a former Walpole High School head football coach, athletic director and teacher, pleaded guilty to three counts each of statutory rape and enticing a minor last month after admitting to having a having a physical relationship with a 15-year-old student.
Prosecutors said Villa sent the girl more than 3,000 text messages in a two-month span last fall.
"I would not want a coach texting my child," Franklin School Committee member Susan Rohrbach said at a meeting earlier this month.
The policy being discussed in Franklin would prohibit students from communicating with staff, teachers and coaches through text messages or online social networks. Staff, coaches and teachers would also be forbidden from using personal e-mail accounts to contact students.
Walpole Superintendent Lincoln Lynch said his department already has an acceptable use policy that all technology users must sign. The policy served its purpose in December, Lynch said, when he was able to …
Lunch trumped Obama in Walpole
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Very few Walpole students saw President Barack Obama’s back-to-school speech to the nation’s students live on Sept. 8, but the issue wasn’t political, schools officials say.
The speech was broadcast at noon during a lunch period, Superintendent Lincoln Lynch and principals said, and would have disrupted the school schedule just three days into the new school year.
Schools ended up recording the speech, officials said, and many planned on showing it this week.
The address sparked a firestorm. Many conservatives expressed apprehension that Obama’s speech would push a partisan agenda.
The president, however, avoided controversial topics, choosing instead to speak to kids about what is expected of them in the coming school year and the benefits of hard work.
"At the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities," he told students in the speech, "unless you show up to those schools, pay attention to those teachers, listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults, and put in the hard work it takes …

Rebel Football Overcomes Framingham for First Win

Wildcats Bowed over by Rebels, 21-0
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Last year, junior quarterback Sonny Mastromatteo repeatedly and decisively reminded the rest of Massachusetts that the state champion Walpole High football team was not all all-scholastic Ryan Izzo.
Mastromatteo moved on to a private school, but it took no time for this year’s senior quarterback and first-year starter Peter Bowes to echo the sentiment.
Last night, on a chilly night in Milton, Bowes helped Izzo lead the Rebels to a solid, 21-0 victory over the hard-hitting Wildcats, running Walpole’s Bay State Conference unbeaten streak to 21 and counting with the victory.
Bowes stepping up on offense became even more necessary as wingback Troy Salavatore, Izzo’s running mate, suffered a game-ending leg injury in the first half.
Despite Salvatore’s loss, the Rebels never skipped a beat, however, as Kenny Woods filled in nicely, Izzo gutted out 88 yards in 19 carries and Bowes delivered the coup de grace, a 43-yard touchdown jaunt that gave the visitors a 21-0 lead with 4:08 left in the …
School charges going up
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
High school and middle school athletic fees and lunch prices districtwide will rise this year.
The School Committee last night voted 5-1 to double activity fees at Walpole High School and implement a $30 activities fees at the middle schools before unanimously deciding to raise lunch prices by 25 cents.
The activity fee increase will be effective immediately and the higher lunch prices will take effect on Oct. 1.
To mitigate budget woes this year, high school administrators were asked to cut $30,000 from their activities budget.
To achieve that level of funding, high school Principal Alan Bernstein said he was forced to cut several activities that paid teachers a stipend to run them.
Students were responsible for paying $30 per year to participate in as many groups as they wanted. With the vote, participation is still limitless, but students must now pay $30 per semester.
The schools brought in about $10,000 in fees last year, said Bernstein, so the best the school could hope for would be double that, which still wouldn’t make up for the entire cut.
"We’re going to get money but it’s not going to be near the …
