Walpole High officially tabbed veteran Rebel coach Bill Tompkins to the athletic director position on Thursday. Tompkins, a Walpole High faculty member, has been the head coach of the Walpole baseball team for the last 31 years and is a member of the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame. He also formerly coached the girls soccer program.
Tompkins replaces Jim Erker, who returned to the position on an interim basis after the resignation of football coach/athletic director Danny Villa. Read tomorrow’s Daily News Transcript for more details of Tompkins’ hiring.
Woe Pioneers! Walpole High tops St. John’s for state lax title

It was a perfect ending to a near-perfect season.
Playing their game and keeping the pedal to the metal from the get-go, the Walpole High laxmen made their lifelong dream come true when they beat St. John’s of Shrewsbury 17-8 yesterday at Commerce Bank Field in Foley Stadium, to win their first state title ever in the sport.
The win came in typical Walpole fashion, with the Rebels controlling the majority of the face-offs and the balanced offense feeding off a stubborn defense that was often part of the offense that excelled in transition.
The Rebels had jumped out to a 5-1 lead just 6:55 into the contest, and a brief St. John’s rally at the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter that temporarily gave the Patriots the momentum was thwarted by a goal from junior Tim McDonald, giving Walpole an 8-3 lead.
Our second line played a really good game,” offered senior Captain Leo Ajemian, who set …

Playoff Round 3: Walpole becomes the first U13 champions
Jun 13th
From the Friday Night Lights Lacrosse website:
At Turco field, behind Walpole High School, Walpole’s U13 Rebels met the Franklin Panthers for the championship final. Both teams came to play and were amped up for a great game.
From the first face off Walpole took control of the game, but it quickly became a game of strong defenses at both ends of the field. Walpole took an early lead, 2-0, but by the half it was a 4-1 game.
Coming into the fourth quarter with a 5-2 lead, Walpole was very aware of Franklin’s ability to come back strong in the final quarter (ask Norwood). Franklin pressured Walpole’s transition game with strong physical play, but in the end Walpole became the first U13 Friday Night Lights champions with a score of 6-2.

C-C Riders: Rebels outlast Patriots, 11-7
Jun 12th
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
Already two quality opponents had discovered that when one plays the Concord-Carlisle High lacrosse team, one does not want to be in a close game with the Patriots.
Walpole High’s Rebels had arrived at Harvard University yesterday with that in mind; after knocking off fifth-seeded Winchester in overtime in the quarterfinals, the Patriots had a repeat performance last Friday when they upended previously unbeaten Medfield, 6-5, also in overtime.
With 10:21 left in the third quarter yesterday the Patriots appeared on the verge of doing it yet again, after middy Cole Fisher hit attack JB Henderson with a long pass and the senior captain buried a shot from left wing, making it 5-all.
The score capped a rally that began after the Patriots were down 5-1 midway through the first period.
Concord-Carlisle’s biggest problem, however, was that the Rebels knew a little about playing in close games themselves, their only loss this season an 8-7 defeat at the hands of Div. 1 …
Rebel laxmen close book on Reading in OT, 10-9
Jun 11th
Read the entire article on the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The Walpole High offense had its work cut out for it after the boys’ lacrosse team fell behind by as man as six goals at the start of the second half of Friday’s 10-9 overtime win over Reading which moved the Rebels on to the Eastern Massachusetts final for the second straight year.
However, if there was one game that had defense written all over it this year, it was this one.
All the Rockets had to do was coast after taking a 7-2 lead into the second half but Walpole’s defense, arguably the best in the state, totally shut the Rockets down the last 18:34 of the game, giving the offense a chance to tie and win in OT, which it did when senior Leo Ajemian put back the rebound of a Davis Butts shot.
Peter Bowes did a sensational job of shutting down All-American Jim Queeney in the game, but at no time did the defense stand tallest than with 5:09 …
