Sunday May 17th – Soccer is ON for today

From the Walpole Youth Soccer Association website:

Sunday May 17th

Hi Soccer Families – Soccer is ON for today in Walpole for In-town soccer [K, u8, u10 clinics] and for TRAVEL Games.

The weather report calls for on and off showers at various points today – which means you may get a little wet depending on when you are at the field. But the fields are in good shape and the kids should have fun. We all know how forecasters are, so if by chance it actually rains hard at any given point in time, for in-town activities the on field coordinator can decide to send you home. Of course you as parents always have the final say, and can decide not to come, or when to leave, if you feel this weather is not going to work for your child. Have a great day.

For TRAVEL games, they generally get played even if it is showering/light rain, and the referee has the final say.

Week 7: Walpole Rebels break Norwood’s Mustangs

From the Friday Night Lights Lacrosse website:

Walpole’s U15 Rebels traveled to Norwood to take on the Mustangs. Norwood’s ranks were a little thin due to school related activities, but they were still able to field a team of big players. Walpole remained mobile and quick to avoid the bigger Norwood players and the Rebels took advantage of their situation by taking the game, 12-5.

On the U13 side, the game predicted to be the game of the season at the U13 level certainly lived up to it’s billing due to two evenly matched teams laying it all out on the field for first place.

The Mustangs went to Walpole to take on the undefeated Rebels. Walpole took an early lead in the first quarter, but Norwood came roaring back and had the lead at the half, 5-3. The third quarter was a back and forth transition game with the middies and defensive players controlling the ball, but it was the goalies on both sides that really made the big plays. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Walpole took the lead, but with under 3 minutes to go, Norwood tied it up again at 6-6. At just over a minute left, Walpole retook the lead and then held it to take the win, 7-6, and first place.

Ryan Express rolls through Norwood, 3-0

A universal hope for all coaches is that their teams don’t peak too soon.
If Wednesday’s game with archrival Norwood, with both teams battling once more for the Bay State Herget title, is any indication then Walpole High baseball coach Bill Tompkins has little to worry about.
In the midst of an up-and-down season where the hitting still hadn’t fully come around and the usually slick gloves have cost the Rebels wins, they fashioned a gem of a victory over Norwood on its own Balch Field with a 3-0 shutout.
All systems were go in this one, hopefully not because it’s the rivalry but that the Rebels, indeed, are turning the corner.
As usual the pitching was excellent, but in this case outstanding as sophomore ace Tom Ryan dominated the hard-hitting Norwood line-up in a complete-game victory, handcuffing the hosts on just two hits while allowing three walks and fanning seven. Catcher Chris Ferro also called an excellent game behind the plate.
   The Ryan Express …

Baseball Rebels put Hammer down on Mansfield, 11-4

“If I had a Hammer, I’d put him in the line-up, I’d put him in the line-up all over this league…”
When it came to hammering out a strategy to get his teams’ offense going, a few weeks ago Walpole High baseball Coach Bill Tompkins decided to call up freshman Craig “The Hammer” Hanley, and has never regretted it.
Hanley had a memorable debut when he stroked a two-run single in his first official at-bat, and the outfielder hasn’t stopped hitting. He had his biggest hit so far in Saturday’s game at Mansfield, pacing an 11-4 win with a grand slam. Unfortunately, the non-league win was the only one in the last four for the Rebels in a gauntlet known as the Bay State Herget.
A 5-2 loss Wednesday to Needham, a 3-2 defeat Friday at the hands of Natick and Monday’s 4-1 loss to a strong Wildcat team in Weymouth have left the Rebels 7-5 in the league, but thanks to parity, they are …

A fan riding the Walpole High softball bandwagon might need Dramamine at the end of this season of motion sickness-inducing stops and starts.
After getting off to a miserable start the Rebels exploded to life with three straight big wins over tough opponents a week ago, putting themselves on the brink of clinching a state tourney berth.
They are still stuck on the brink of the state tourney, thanks to a pair of losses reminiscent of those that put them in a 2-3 hole to start the season.
Unfortunately for the Rebels, they are starting to prove how hard old habits are to break as they have reverted to their earlier bad ones.
“It was just a lot of sloppy play to start out,” said Coach Jim Duffy of Walpole’s latest loss, Monday’s 4-2 defeat at the hands of Weymouth at Bird School, dropping the locals to 7-5 with four games left. “We’re going back to our old ways. We need to regroup, …

Week 6: U15 Walpole wrestles win away from Mansfield

From the Friday Night Lights Lacrosse website:

In a game under the lights at Mansfield High School, U15 Mansfield delivered the first body blow with four straight goals in the first four minutes of the game.  Walpole got up off the mat, and answered with an offensive flurry of their own, tying the game at 4 – 4 at the half.  The second half was all Walpole, with relentless offensive pressure in the second half, they went on to win 10-6.
