WHS girls’ lax starts season with 16-5 win over Dedham
From the Wicked Local Walpole website:
The Walpole High girls’ lacrosse team graduated its all-time leading scorer last year in Jess Guisti, but don’t remind Dedham of that.
Picking up where they left off last year when they tied the school’s single-season scoring record, the high-powered Rebels relied on balanced scoring to open the season with a 16-5 victory over the Marauders at Turco Field yesterday.
Only one player scored a hat trick in the win, although 11 different players had at least one goal, 13 had at least one point and 27 players saw action.
After taking an 11-4 lead at halftime the Rebel defense proceeded to totally shut the Marauders down the second half, holding them scoreless until a series of restarts in Walpole’s end finally yielded the fifth goal with 10 seconds left to play.
The Rebels not only controlled the clock the second half, but also territorial play. They were able to set up a handful of scores in the middle of the final stanza on crisp passing.
Michaela Brady led the charge with the game’s lone hat trick. Kristen Morrissey scored her only point when she gave Walpole a 1-0 lead just 46 seconds in, and less than 10 minutes in, five players had scored for Walpole, with Brady notching her first two goals.
Also scoring multiple goals were Sarah Buckley, Molly Haswell and Shelby Guisti, with Kellie Sullivan, Morrissey, Alicia Tosone, Kim Walsh, Monica Bangerskis, Hannah Rockwood and Cecelia Abely adding one apiece. Brady led the team with four points while senior captains Sullivan and Haswell followed with three. Junior goalie Kayla Cullen also made nine saves in the win.
“They’re a building program but I thought they made us work,” offered new Head Coach Tim Drummond of his first career win. “Their goalie also made some nice saves. When it was 11 to four at halftime, I thought it was time to tighten it up, and the team did that, going 24 minutes into the second half without giving up a goal.”
The Rebels next host Braintree High at Turco Field this Thursday, game time at 3:45PM.
