Lacrosse: WHS girls chase powerful Reading to wire in 8-7 loss

From the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Jackie Kelliher vs Reading.jpg

The Walpole High girls’ lacrosse team finally got its biggest test of the season thus far when it hosted Middlesex League power Reading at Turco Field yesterday, and although the Rebels suffered their first defeat of the season (against seven wins) they more than proved they belonged.
Only their lack of experience on defense, compared to the veteran Reading team that gave Div. 1 North champion Framingham fits in last year’s state tourney, was the difference in an 8-7 loss.
The difference in experience showed in the second half when the Rockets kept getting the ball back in Walpole’s end after shots and misconnected passes, thus keeping the ball in the Rebels’ end for long stretches of time.
Although they got the ball back repeatedly, however, the Rockets had as much trouble scoring on Walpole in the second half as the Rebels had in clearing them out of their zone. Between hitting the post three times, getting stopped point blank …

Update for WED 4/22 Ellis & Mylod are OPEN

From the Walpole Youth Soccer Association website:

PLease make sure you use common sense and stay away from the mushy areas – move the goals at least 10yds away from the goalie boxes, and if it starts to rain and the ground gets mushy – please stop playing.
Thanks

Softball: Rebels split pair, record at 2-3

From the Wicked Local Walpole website:

It was the best of games, it was the worst of games, to misquote Charles Dickens.
The Walpole High softball team split a pair of games last week to settle in at 2-3, but it ran the gamut of highs and lows.
The high came last Wednesday when the Rebels, playing at home, came roaring back from a 7-2 deficit to steal an 8-7 win from Newton North.
The low came when Norwood pitcher Lauren Duggan, on a roll since the season began, shackled the Walpole offense on just three hits Friday.
For the second straight time starting pitcher Caroline Crimmins was a victim of lack of support in the field as she was driven from the mound by Newton North. By the third, the Rebels were in a 7-2 hole.
“She pitched well enough, but some errors made in the first couple of innings made it tough for her,” said Coach Jim Duffy.
Sam Cametti came on in relief in the third, and with improved defense behind her and a steady hand, she shut the Tigers down for the final four …

Unbeaten girls lacrosse takes two more

From the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Last year it was the defending league champion Wellesley boys’ lacrosse team that was hearing footsteps getting inexorably closer, footsteps that eventually overtook and trampled them as Walpole won its first-ever Bay State Herget title.
This year, it’s the Raider girls.
One third of the way through the season both the Wellesley and Walpole High girls, off to their best start in program history, sit deadlocked atop the Herget with identical 7-0 records.
Granted the upstart Rebels still haven’t seen the league iron, and the powerful Raiders have been stingy with goals allowed (5 or fewer in 5 of those games), but the mere record itself has to have Wellesley at least thinking about Walpole. Especially since the teams will be having a showdown this Monday (April 27, 3:45PM) in Wellesley.
The main difference between the teams at this point might be experience, but the Rebels have shown signs of catching up in that department, especially in their own zone. After surrendering nine goals each to Braintree and Newton North, two struggling teams, to start the season, the Rebels finished the week of play by …

A century of education in Walpole

From the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Current and former students, teachers and administrators of Walpole High assembled one night last week to celebrate the school’s 100 years on Common Street.
The first students to graduate from the then-tiny school built atop Butcher Hill in 1908 received their sheepskins in the spring of 1909 with Superintendent Frederick Kingman, School Committee Chairman Edward Plimpton and Principal George Morris on hand.
On the night of April 15, current Superintendent Lincoln Lynch, School Committee Chairman Nancy Gallivan and Principal Alan Bernstein expressed how proud they were to be associated with a school that has such a rich history.
“There’re not very many principals, I think, standing where I am celebrating 100-year anniversaries,” said Bernstein, speaking to about 30 people in the school’s library. “It’s a real honor. It’s very, very special to me.”
Tables in the school’s foyer displayed century-old pictures of the school and a class photo from the 1920s while visitors were able to peruse yearbooks from as far back as 1940 and view several individual student pictures from the 20s.
The building is special because graduates of all ages …

Rebels eke out 6-5 win over Norwood in ninth

From the Wicked Local Walpole website:

sonnyplay1-web.jpg

While the Massachusetts High School baseball season officially began at the beginning of April, for perennial Bay State Herget challengers and archrivals Walpole and Norwood, it doesn’t really begin until they face each other for the first time.
That happened on Friday at Walpole’s Eldracher Field and as usual, it was a thrilling nail-biter which the defending league champion Rebels took by a 6-5 score. The game had everything. Along with excellent pitching, the teams added great fielding, including outstanding plays by both shortstops, Walpole’s Sonny Mastromatteo and Norwood’s Brian Williams. However there were also struggles afield as Norwood committed five errors and had trouble on the mound in the decisive ninth. There were also three calls that could have gone either way, including a photo finish foot race to the first base bag when Walpole hurler Kyle Meredith fielded a ball in the infield.
Like the vast majority of meetings between the two the past decade, it was close from start to finish, keeping a large crowd glued …

Coach’s presence caused concern

From the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Local authorities say Daniel Villa, the 44-year-old former Walpole High School football coach and athletic director charged with raping a student, was banned from Walpole because he had been seen in town on several occasions since his release from custody in January.

His presence alone has made some residents uncomfortable, said Walpole Police Chief Richard Stillman.

A Norfolk Superior Court judge last week ordered Villa to stay out of Walpole. The decision stiffens bail terms given to the former New England Patriot at the district court level in January, which required him to stay away from Walpole schools.

David Traub, a spokesman for the district attorney, said his office requested the townwide ban, but he could not divulge why.

Villa pleaded not guilty to three counts of statutory rape and three counts of enticement of a minor at his arraignment in December.

Released from custody on Jan. 7, Villa, who, the district attorney’s office allege raped a 15-year-old Walpole High School student three times, was equipped with a GPS device so authorities can monitor his whereabouts.

At that hearing in Wrentham, Villa, along with keeping away from schools, was also ordered not to contact the …

New heroes help lead unbeaten Rebels to track sweep over Norwood

From the Wicked Local Walpole website:

Skip Kitchen

It seems that every time the Walpole track teams take the field these days, coaches Conor Cashman and Tim Giblin find new heroes among their growing rosters.
The pattern continued last week as the girls and boys’ teams hosted Norwood at Turco Field.
With old standbys like Bay State Conference sprint champion Vinnie Lee and regular multiple-event winner Erica Hawley remaining consistent, as well as numerous competitors from both squads scoring personal best marks, the Rebels were able to put together a convincing sweep of the meets, with the boys rolling to a 106-30 victory and the girls beating the Mustangs 88-48.
With the wins both teams remain unbeaten this season, the boys lifting their record to 3-0 and the girls moving to 2-0-1.
It was apparent from the get-go that the Norwood squads were going to suffer from a lethal combination of their lack of depth and Walpole’s depth and balance.
The girls’ meet was the one most in question as Norwood, which has excellent …
